As a professional that’s been in the business for a long time, I know first-hand the importance of using quality tools. For tasks like levelling, a reliable tool can make the difference between a smooth project and a crooked mess.

I’ve used all types of levels over the years, but digital magnetic levels designed for metalworking really help streamline projects that involve steel fabrication, metal framing, and similar metal construction.

Stabila is known for making some of the best levels and measuring tools in the industry. I recently had the chance to test out their Type 96M-2 Magnetic Digital TECH Level to see how it performs for hands-free measuring and levelling work on metal surfaces. After using it extensively for a month across various projects, I’m thoroughly impressed with its features, accuracy, and durability. This digital level is definitely worth it.

Key Features

The Stabila Type 96M-2 has a number of useful features that make it an excellent digital magnetic level option:

  • Extra strong rare earth magnets – The built-in rare earth magnets on this Stabila level are incredibly strong. Once attached to a steel surface, the level grips tightly and won’t detach or shift even when jostled. This allows true hands-free operation without needing someone to hold the level.
  • Electronic angle measurements accurate to 0.05 degrees – The digital readout on the Stabila 96M-2 provides angle measurements precise to 0.05 degrees. This level of accuracy helps dial in perfectly straight and level components during fabrication and installation.
  • Dual digital displays readable from side and top – Dual digital displays are built into the level, providing easy visibility from above as well as from the side. The displays are backlit and easy to read in any lighting.
  • IP65 waterproof and dustproof rating – With a waterproof/dustproof rating of IP65, this is one rugged level. It survived being splashed with water and covered in sawdust on the jobsite. The removable end caps provide access for cleaning.
  • “Spot on” audio leveling indicator – An audible tone provides notification when the level reaches the desired angle. This handy feature allows precise leveling without needing to constantly check the display.
  • Impact resistant end caps – The end caps are made from a durable shock-absorbing material that protects the frame if the level is dropped.
  • Easy electronic recalibration – The digital module can be recalibrated if needed in the future using the built-in vial system. Recalibration and adjustment is quick and simple.
  • Displays degrees, percent, rise/run – Values can be toggled between degrees, percent slope, and rise/run in either metric or imperial units. Very handy for calculating slopes and offsets.

Putting It to the Test

To really evaluate how the 96M-2 performs for everyday use, I tested it extensively across a few recent commercial construction projects:

Steel Beam Leveling

The first project involved installing 25-foot steel beams to support a mezzanine addition. We needed to ensure each beam was perfectly level before securing in place.

I put the Stabila magnetic level on each beam, moving it along the length and making small adjustments until it signaled level. Despite the beams being heavily scratched and rusted, the magnets held tightly, allowing me to work hands-free. The process was quick, easy and accurate.

Metal Stud Framing

On another job we were framing interior walls with metal studs to create smaller office spaces within a warehouse. The Stabila level made it easy to position each stud perfectly vertical for straight walls and square corners.

I attached the level magnetically, adjusted the stud by tapping with a hammer until the audible tone sounded, then fastened in place. The walls came out very straight and true.

Stair Stringer Installation

We used the 96M-2 when installing the stringers for a set of steel stairs. The split-screen display came in very handy for this task, as I could position the level flat on each stringer and read the side display while still having the top display visible. I was able to fine tune the angle precisely using the rise/run readout.

Evaluating Existing Steel Members

There were a few instances where I needed to evaluate existing steel columns, supports, and rafters to determine if they were still true or had shifted over time. The digital level made it quick and easy to take angle and plumb measurements. I just slapped it on magnetically and took readings from multiple positions.

Pros and Cons

After using the Stabila Type 96M-2 Digital Magnetic Level extensively, here are the key pros and cons I observed:

Pros

  • Super strong rare earth magnets adhere tightly
  • Highly accurate digital angle measurements
  • Dual displays provide visibility from multiple angles
  • Rugged waterproof/dustproof construction
  • Handy audible leveling alert feature
  • Helpful rise/run and percent slope readings
  • Lightweight and compact profile fits in pouch

Cons

  • Higher price than basic levels
  • Limited usefulness off of metal surfaces
  • Batteries add operating cost over the long term

Conclusion

Overall, the Stabila Type 96M-2 Digital Magnetic Level is an excellent professional grade tool for metal fabrication, installation, and alignment work. The powerful rare earth magnets provide a high strength hands-free grip on steel surfaces.

I especially like the dual digital displays, audible levelling alert, and the high accuracy of angle measurements. The digital features, durable construction, and useful functions like rise/run readout make it easier and faster to work than traditional levels.

While it does come at a premium price, I think the improved efficiency and precision justify the cost for frequent metalworking applications. It has quickly become my go-to level for any steel construction project. I would highly recommend it for other metal fabrication pros, installers, and contractors.
