Plunge router reviews

How To Use A Plunge Router

If you’ve read the plunge router reviews but don’t know how to actually use this tool, the following article is for you.

A plunge router cuts by guiding a high speed rotary bit through the wood. The shape of the cut is controlled by the contour of the cutter and the depth setting. Routers are designed to cut decorative edges on wood or cut grooves in the wood. Some woodworking projects require a groove that starts in from the edge and only runs for a short distance. Mortise and tenon joints are good examples. A plunge router allows the user to position the router over the wood and drop the bit down or plunge it into the wood exactly where needed. Routers can be used to cut edges on cupboard doors, cut grooves for joints or hinges, cut out profiles in wood and other decorative applications like writing in wood.

Select the right bit

Before you can start working with your new router, you need to select the right bit for the task at hand. Each bit can give several different cuts, depending on what depth setting you’ve selected. A router can cut edges or route patterns out of the wood. When you have selected the right bit, you have to determine how deep you want the cut to be as you have to set the base at that depth.

Insert the bit

The next step is to insert the bit into the router. When you insert a bit or change bits always make sure the router is unplugged. This is an important safety measure that prevents accidents from happening. Depress the spindle lock and loosen the collet. Some models use a special wrench for this task. Once it’s loose, insert the bit and tighten with a clockwise turn. Release the spindle lock when tight enough.

Setting the depth of the base

You want to set the depth while the router is still unplugged. Only plug it in when you are ready to start cutting. Loosen the locking bolt and then release the lever for the plunge stop. Use the scale at the side to set the depth stop. In order to set it, set the plunge router down on the wood and push the router down until the bit touches the wood. Fasten the plunge lock lever. Rotate the depth stop knob down as far as you can. This is the starting point, you adjust the depth from there. If you are routing a deep groove, start shallow and make several passes, adjusting the depth with every pass.

Use a jig for a straight line

When you use a plunge router, you need a pattern to follow. A straight edge or board clamped at the right distance is excellent for this. Centre the router bit then clamp the board so that it touches the flat edge of the router. This way the board will guide the router to give you the perfect cut.

Ready to work

You are now ready to plug the router in and start working. Put your safety glasses on and push the start switch. Never start the router with it touching the wood. To avoid kick-back, start the router away from the wood and then lower it onto the wood. You can now follow the pattern you have selected and produce stunning work with your new router. Best value for money plunge router?

This question sounds pretty straight forward, but the answer is not that straight forward. To find the best plunge router for the money, you need to ask yourself a few questions. How often you use it and what kind of work you are planning to take on with this tool has a huge impact on what kind of router will be the best value for you.

If you are going to use it infrequently and for light duty work, there is no need to buy the most expensive and top rated router. A budget model may be the answer for you in this case. On the other hand, if you are going to use it on a regular basis for all kinds of routing work, you might want to consider a top model that can handle the punishment.

Always remember “safety first”
